Psalm 31:3 – 5

“3 For you are my rock and my fortress;

    and for your name's sake you lead me and guide me;

4 you take me out of the net they have hidden for me,

    for you are my refuge.

5 Into your hand I commit my spirit;

    you have redeemed me, O Lord, faithful God.”

It isn’t known when David wrote this psalm, but it is noted it is thought this psalm was written when he was being pursued by Saul and his men. It is a psalm for Good Friday, yesterday, and is a psalm Christ will quote from the cross.

Ironically, for David and for us, the redemption for is completed by Christ giving of himself, a sacrificial gift for us. The disciples will not know this for another day, and at times in our own lives, we forget or ignore the redemption we have in Christ too. The disciples are in hiding, like David, yet unlike David, they do not know who to turn to and seek help in their own distress on this day between Christ’s death and his resurrection. They suffer from their betrayal and/or abandonment of Christ.

Pray with me: Gracious Father, help me to never lose sight of you as my rock and fortress. Help me to know you are to whom I turn through every situation. Help me to focus on you and you alone as my source of strength. In Christ’s name, Amen.
