Philippians 2:5-8
“5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.”
This is a passage that speaks to me of my limitations on my ability to walk with Christ. My only comfort, if that is an appropriate line of thinking, is I know I’m not alone. Our pastor has noted on many occasions that the entire number of faithful was down to one when Christ was on that cross alone. Disciples had abandoned him, denied him and even betrayed him. There is more shame in my claim than comfort.
What is the equivalent today? When do I abandon Christ and walk away from our servant, who suffered on our behalf? Too often I’m afraid. Paul notes the posture and mindset of Christ, our cornerstone of faith, whom the builders, including me at times, rejected. Being God, he humbled himself to the Father to fulfill his mission and purpose on earth, to suffer and die for us and our sin.
We pray: Gracious and merciful Father, Have mercy on me, a poor, sinful being. Wretch that I am, I am ashamed of forsaking your Son during my walk on earth. Forgive me. In His Holy and Precious Name, Amen.
