God's Right Hand

Jul 23, 2025    David Baldner

Though I walk in the midst of trouble, you preserve my life; you stretch out your hand against the wrath of my enemies, and your right hand delivers me. 8The Lord will fulfill his purpose for me; your steadfast love, O Lord, endures forever. Do not forsake the work of your hands. (Psalm 138:7-8)

Positional authority is extended in an organization chart through line and staff functions. The CEO is at the top, followed by subordinates. Some in the company may say, "Old Greg is his right-hand man," which is a title inferred on whomever the "go-to" person for the leader is.

We hear "hand of God," and we are taken immediately to God's action seen in creation, or guiding Israel from Egypt, or in the birth of his Son. We see God's hand in much.

God's "right-hand," his Son, is present in much as well. In Acts 7:55-56, we read of the stoning of Stephen, "But he, full of the Holy Spirit, gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of God. 56And he said, “Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God.” God's Son is with him and very active in our lives.

In suffering, Christ appeared to Stephen to remind him of his grace, which is more than sufficient. It provided Stephen with the glory of the promise to remove his suffering and the joy of being with the Lord.

God's "right hand" will deliver all of us to be with him. David notes this in his psalm today.

What role does Christ play in our daily lives? Do we turn to Christ in times of need, suffering, hope, and blessings? Do we turn to Christ at all times to give him thanks, knowing his grace is sufficient for us?

Pray we seek Christ daily, for thanks, for praise, for joy, and for need.
