Give Me Wisdom

Jan 30, 2026    David Baldner

For the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men. 26For consider your calling, brothers: not many of you were wise according to worldly standards,[a] not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. 27But God chose what is foolish in the world to shame the wise; God chose what is weak in the world to shame the strong; 28God chose what is low and despised in the world, even things that are not, to bring to nothing things that are, 29so that no human being might boast in the presence of God. 30And because of him you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, righteousness and sanctification and redemption, 31so that, as it is written, “Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord" (1 Corinthians 1:25-31).

It appears as though Bill Belichick has been snubbed by the NFL Hall of Fame. Why was a man with six Super Bowl rings as a head coach not elected on his first ballot? Two scandals, Deflategate and Spygate, are mentioned. I think, though, scandals are overlooked if people really like you deep down. It is said that Pete Rose would have elevated quickly into MLB's Hall of Fame once the ban was lifted, BUT fellow players hated him.

What do I know? I have no experience playing the game in formal settings nor coaching in any real sense. I'm a novice at best. My expertise is limited in matters such as this..

Paul, today, asks those of us seeking worldly wisdom to what end? Don't look at Christ and question his wisdom based on the ways of this world.

God had a plan from the day of the fall articulated in Genesis 3, presented by prophets, and fulfilled by his Son Jesus Christ. He chose to enter this world in lowly estate, meek in stature, but obedient to death on a cross. God chooses the unlikely, as evidenced by his disciples, and Paul writes for us today. As a follower of Christ, expect mock and ridicule because you are not considered wise. Think of the dialog today as people advance their credentials as wisdom, but we are just simple followers of a faith.

Pray with me: Gracious Father, Give me wisdom in your ways, not the ways of this world. Give me insight and discernment into your Word. I know the ways of this world lead only to my own end, but your ways offer me eternal life through faith in your Son, Jesus Christ. Amen and amen.
