The Rock

The Rock, his work is perfect, for all his ways are justice. A God of faithfulness and without iniquity, just and upright is he. (Deuteronomy 32:4)

Interestingly enough, as I read this verse supplied by Pastor Stephen as a means to help understand today's attribute of God ("just"), I thought, "This sounds like a psalm." The full passage, v 1 - 4, in fact is described in the study notes as "...an exaltation of the one true God." The notes further explain the word "Rock" as a description is often used in Psalms based on the Hebrew "selah', "rock or cliff face;" Hebrew "tsur, "massive rock or boulder."

Why is this important? Because Psalms uses the word "rock" as shelter for refuge or hiding. "The Lord is, 'The Rock of my salvation'" (Psalm 89:26). We take shelter and refuge in "The Rock."

The Apostle John states of the shelter we take in the God of our salvation this way, "If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." (1 John 1:8-9)

Our God is just, meaning fair and impartial. He weighs our sins on scales that are more than fair and just through our salvation given to us from our Just God, our Rock, through the suffering, death and resurrection of Christ. Our faith, given to us by our just and fair God through our baptism, is our Rock and salvation.

We give thanks to God for being our Rock, our salvation, given to us by our faith in His Son.
