From Everlasting to Everlasting

A Prayer of Moses, the man of God.

Lord, you have been our dwelling place in all generations. 2Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever you had formed the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God. (Psalm 90:1 -2)

If I were to ask you, "Who is God?" or, "What are the attributes that form God?", what would your answer be?

Think about that for a moment. What are the traits of God from your understanding of who He is? Where do you get those ideas of the traits or attributes of God? Beliefs you've formed over time? Legend? Instruction? Scripture?

As Pastor Eric noted Sunday in his sermon on Proverbs 8 (see video link), we are tempted at times to attribute something of God's not found in scripture, which means it isn't valid. Our own insight and understanding as to who God is needs scriptural support. From today's passage, we know God is eternal. He was, is now and ever shall be. He has no beginning and no end.

Moses full prayer in Psalm 90 is a lament, so he introduces it by speaking to God in truth, "God, you are eternal." He then moves into man's temporary status on this earth. It's a great psalm to read.

The God we know is eternal. We worship a God who is now, was and ever shall be.

We pray: Holy God, Almighty and Everlasting Father, You are eternal. Our time on earth is temporary. Help us to follow you, learn from you by seeking your wisdom and to share the news of your love and grace with others in the brief time we have. In Christ's name, Amen.
