God is in Control

Nov 21, 2025    David Baldner

[Jesus] is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. 16For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. 17And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. 18And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. 19For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, 20and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross. (Colossians 1:15-20)

Each Wednesday, our elders meet with our pastors to study God's Word and talk about church concerns. The bible passage we looked at was Psalm 108 which David wrote. A classic psalm for David, it starts with praises to the living God, and it moves to a section in which David writes of God's judgment on those who do not follow him (God).

Psalm 108 concludes:

"12Oh grant us help against the foe, for vain is the salvation of man! 13With God we shall do valiantly; it is he who will tread down our foes."

"Vain is the salvation of man" David writes. The NIV translation reads, "...for human help is worthless." As men, we don't like uncertainty, but our world has, is, and always will be a place of uncertainty. Yet our plans can go awry, and God's plans do not.

Let's listen to God's Word carefully in today's passage(s).

"And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together."

"and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross."

God is in control. Pray we submit to his will in this world. Pray that regardless of the circumstances in which we find ourselves, that we use that time to be bold and share the good news of Christ. The world is hostile to that message, so pray for courage, for Christ's Spirit to give us boldness. Pray that we boldly confess and speak Christ and him crucified to the lost in this world.
