Worship in Spirit and Truth: A Life Surrendered to Christ
What if worship was never meant to be confined to a building, a mountain, or a particular style of music? In John chapter 4, Jesus has a remarkable conversation with a Samaritan woman that completely reframes everything we think we know about worship. She raises the age-old debate about the right place to worship, pointing to Mount Gerizim with its deep history tied to Abraham, Jacob, and Joseph. Jesus responds with something that would have stunned everyone listening: neither that mountain nor Jerusalem is where true worship belongs. The hour has come, he says, when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth. This is not a minor adjustment to the rules of religion. It is a complete transformation of what worship means. It moves worship from the external, the location, the decor, the style, the appearance, into the internal, the spirit living within us and the truth of who we are worshiping. When we connect this to John 3 and the conversation with Nicodemus about being born of the Spirit, and to John 14:6 where Jesus declares himself the way, the truth, and the life, a full picture begins to emerge. Worship is not a ritual we perform. It is a life oriented entirely around Jesus Christ. That is a message worth sitting with.
