Mission From God

After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them on ahead of him, two by two, into every town and place where he himself was about to go. 2And he said to them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore pray earnestly to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest. 3Go your way; behold, I am sending you out as lambs in the midst of wolves. 4Carry no moneybag, no knapsack, no sandals, and greet no one on the road. 5Whatever house you enter, first say, ‘Peace be to this house!’ 6And if a son of peace is there, your peace will rest upon him. But if not, it will return to you. (Luke 10:1-6)

"We're on a mission from God," said Elwood Blues, brother to Jake. Jake and Elwood were on a "mission from God," sent to save the orphanage that raised them. It was a mission that promised redemption for them. They felt "sent."

We "sent" 80 children (give or take) from several congregations to the Panhandle/South Plains Lutheran Camp (PSPLC) to teach, learn, and focus on what it means to be a disciple of Christ. In Sunday school yesterday, we talked about ways were are all "sent" into our communities daily to witness. The thought intimidates us, the idea of witnessing about faith to those who don't believe, but God sends us to do just that.

We see Christ send out 72 people, in pairs, to share the good news, heal the sick, cast out demons, and other acts in His Name. "Carry a light load, depend on the kindness of those who welcome you, and offer peace to the home as you enter." Christ continues in these instructions, but essentially, they are to depend on Christ and His Name in their work because "the harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few."

The harvest is abundantly plentiful today. The workers, our youth, are being taught by people who are sent to teach and lead our work as an act of service. We teach, lead, serve and support people in our church to disciple daily and weekly. Luke serves as a reminder of why we do it. The harvest is plentiful.

Pray with me: Lord, help me see the needs around me and to build relationships with those who do not know you so that we may share the good news with them. In Christ's name, Amen.
