God Almighty
When Abram was ninety-nine years old the Lord appeared to Abram and said to him, “I am God Almighty; walk before me, and be blameless, 2that I may make my covenant between me and you, and may multiply you greatly.” (Genesis 17:1-2)
Shohei Ohtani is just a freak of nature. Truly a once in a lifetime or century kind of player in baseball. He got back on the mound the other night after Tommy John surgery, and he demonstrated he is still a man-child when it comes to pitching (brief appearance, but forceful). He is a force on both offense (batting) and defense (pitching). He's a big man first of all and imposing from the mound, but his bat speed and hitting ability make him powerful.
If you ask yourself who is the most powerful athlete in your lifetime, it would be interesting to see who everyone comes up with. Raw power rarely translates to excellence in athletics since it doesn't account for timing, finesse and other fine motor skills that make an athlete complete. We do, however, love an athlete that exhibits strength, power, and skill.
God appears to Abram (soon to be Abraham after the covenant is complete) to tell him he is going to be the father of His people. At my age, I'd have questions. At 99, I'd have a ton of questions. God answers many of them in His introduction, "I am God Almighty." God is all-powerful, omnipotent.
Christ uses an metaphor to talk about salvation in Matthew 19:24-26: "Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.” 25When the disciples heard this, they were greatly astonished, saying, “Who then can be saved?” 26But Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”
Christ doesn't say where the line is to make a person rich, so the idea of how difficult it is for "rich" to enter the kingdom of heaven clearly concerns the disciples. He replies, "With God, all things are possible." Our salvation is secure in our baptism with faith being written on our heart by the Holy Spirit. God, all-powerful, does this and other miraculous things. God Almighty is all-powerful or "Omnipotent." He can save a sinful man like me. He can save a wicked generation like us.
Gracious Father, Almighty God, we are in awe of your power, exhibited through your creation, from the tiniest aspects of what we know to the most powerful aspects of everything you have done. I are humbled by your plan to save me, a miserable, sinful being. Your power and might are second to no one or to no thing. We are thankful for the power exhibited in your love for us. In Christ's name, Amen.
