Over All Creation
The Lord looks down from heaven; he sees all the children of man; 14from where he sits enthroned he looks out on all the inhabitants of the earth, 15 he who fashions the hearts of them all and observes all their deeds. 16The king is not saved by his great army; a warrior is not delivered by his great strength. 17 The war horse is a false hope for salvation, and by its great might it cannot rescue. (Psalm 33:13-17)
The state, back in the old days (1980s - 2000), had an organization chart for the statewide school system (on the Texas Education Agency handbook then website) and as a reminder of who we serve, put "children" at the top of the chart. The top box is reserved for those in positional authority. It's not that kids had authority over our schools, but that kids are why we exist. Their education is an educator's driving force.
That all changed when a new governor took the reins several years ago. He put these words on top of the organization chart in place of children: "The Governor." It's true by law that he is over the school system since he appoints the commissioner, but it was a notable change in what the chart communicated (arguably the entire state government - governor, legislature and state courts are, but that's not for here).
We are fashioning an organization chart for our church as we seek accreditation for our school. You would be pleased to see Christ at the top of our chart at church. The church is his, and we exist to make disciples.
God, however, is seated in positional authority over all creatures on earth, his creation. Psalm 33:13 states that clearly. He is clearly over that creation as he looks out on it from his throne. From that throne, he "fashions" the hearts of everyone: kings, warrior, armies, citizens and creation all answer to God.
This victory, won for our salvation (v 17), is from Christ. Christ reins victorious for us over sin, Satan and death. All leaders will bow down to Christ on the day of his return - chosen by election, succession, assigned, or violent overthrow. Pray we humble ourselves to the Almighty and bow before him for all he has done to reign supreme and rein victorious for us. Pray we fear and love God and show him the reverence of his position over his creation.
