Holy Spirit, Light Divine

Holy Spirit, Light Divine

1 Holy Spirit, light divine, shine upon this heart of mine;

Chase the shades of night away, turn the darkness into day.

2 Let me see my Savior's face, let me all His beauties trace;

Show those glorious truths to me which are only known to Thee.

(Lutheran Service Book 496; Andrew Reed, 1787-1862, alt.; Public domain)

"For God, who said, “Let light shine out of darkness,” has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ." (2 Corinthians 4:6)

"This is a simple but profound prayer to the Holy Spirit. It begins by invoking the Holy Spirit to shine light on the heart darkened by sin and death." Clearly the writer of the hymn, Andrew Reed, is asking God's Spirit for revelation into the truths from Christ.

We continue in the season of Pentecost and seek light on God's truths as revealed in His Word. In worship, prayer, devotion, and sacraments we seek these truths and strength from God's Spirit to open our hearts and lower our resistance to the Spirit's work in us, which began in us in our baptism.

Pray for revelation, strength and truth and seek Christ's light from His Spirit.
