Silver-Tongued Devils
And they asked [Jesus], “Teacher, when will these things be, and what will be the sign when these things are about to take place?” 8And he said, “See that you are not led astray. For many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am he!’ and, ‘The time is at hand!’ Do not go after them. 9And when you hear of wars and tumults, do not be terrified, for these things must first take place, but the end will not be at once” (Luke 21:7-9).
Christ is warning us against imposters in the faith and reminding us that these are just warning signs for the beginning of the end. Christ seems to be warning us against the "silver-tongued devils" whose words, while sounding reasonable, can mislead entire people over the cliff of following someone who has nothing more than his or her own glory in mind. If Christ's actual warning was given while he was on earth, imagine the truth of his warning today, where multiple platforms exist in which people can spin deception faster and in many directions at once.
As we encounter more and more deception from false prophets, it seems that the answer to the problem is found in Christ alone, his Word, and faith in the true and living Son of God alone. Is it the truth? Pray and ask for God's guidance, wisdom and discernment. Time is on our side, regardless of the urgency, because we are on God's time. Seek answers from God's Word and from those who are knowledgeable in his Word and wise in faith.
Pray with me: Gracious and Merciful God, our wisdom has no real measurement in comparison with yours, so help us to remember to turn to you in times of darkness, when truth is void in this world. Send your Spirit to enlighten us and to give us words that may help those who are tempted by this world and its wisdom. Send your Spirit to move the hearts of men to your truth and not the truth of this world. In Christ's name, Amen.
